In ancient Greece, a phalanx was a military formation of troops in close, deep ranks and files. A rapidly advancing phalanx could be terrifying, but the formation had a key weakness: a lack of mobility and maneuverability. The soldiers couldn't change direction quickly, which left the rear and flanks vulnerable to attack.
